FIRST CLASS ON THE CHEAP

The best charming hotels, boutique hotels, pensions, and affordable apartments in Prague:

Updated  17/10/2008

Centrally  located upgraded three star hotels, residences and apartments in the Charles Bridge, Mala Strana, and Castle areas:

U ZLUTE BOTY ( At the Yellow Boot ) (***L): One of our best finds in Prague, this small family owned residence (so intimate we would hardly call it a hotel) is located in the most picturesque part of the Castle area (Hradcany). Away from the crowds, close to the major embassies (the US embassy is just round the corner), with plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby, it stands a short and pleasant walk from the Royal Castle. The Charles Bridge is two hundred meters away, via the remarkable Nerudova street flanked with eye catching barroco buildings and shops. U Zlute Boty borders the Lesser Side (Mala Strana): a much visited open air museum-like district.

Edificated in 1633, the house stands on a quaint street, at the foot of the highly picturesque Jánský vršek stairs. It has been recently reconstructed in its original renaissance style. The seven rooms are amazing, reflecting a warm "chalet feeling": open, airy, immaculate, they actually typifies the atmosphere of Prague.  We loved the wood paneled floor, painted beams, and lovely view from some rooms to the quiet neighbouring private garden. Tastefully designed, decorated with antiques, they are all spacious and much suitable for both couple and families. Some of them are communicating, and there is a great studio, consisting in two adjoining rooms overlooking the small open-air courtyard (where breakfast can be ordered on request when weather allows). Each room is equipped with IDD phone, radio, and a very useful complimentary high speed WiFi internet connection (plus a computer in the public area, accessible free of charge). Small, though convenient nicely appointed bathrooms.

The rates start from CZK 2,800 for a Single Room in the low season, up to CZK 3,700 for a Double Room in the high season. A four people family will pay about CZK 4,450– CZK 4,900 only. Special offers and discounted packages are available all year long. A generous hot buffet breakfast is included.

Despite of its small size, U Zlute Boty offers an efficient 24 hours reception. The friendly and anticipating staff speaks English. Major credit cards accepted.

A gem of a find.

Centrally located upgraded three star hotels, residences and apartments in the New & Old Town:

HOTEL ANNA (***L): A welcoming family run hotel, housed in a lovely turn of the century building with an Art Nouveau original decoration. The HOTEL ANNA stands in a quiet street shadowed by old trees, in the fine Vinohrady residential area: only one metro station from the Venceslas square, and a stone throw from the National Museum. Its 23 rooms  and apartments have just received an amazingly successful  refurbishment, as perfection seems to be the manager's motto. Clean, very comfortably furnished, displaying elegant fabrics, they are equipped with IDD telephone, satellite TV (receiving CNN and the German channels), and large writing desk (as many businessmen like to stay here). Elegant engraved pictures of the old city of Prague decorate the walls. Bathrooms are brand new, and all equipped with air dryer, towel dryer, and shower (no tub). Room 501 is actually an attic apartment: large and full of charm, with a panoramic view over Hradcany (the castle area) and Prague's green hills, it is our favourite.

Many services are available: like pressing, exchange, tours and shows information, parking in front of the building. As car thieves brought to Prague quite a bad reputation, the hotel's management got the excellent idea to provide wheel lockers! Free of charge! For even more safety, there is a camera controlling both the entrance and the parking. Use of fax and Internet is available through the newly re-designed reception desk, next by the open fireplace which gives  much charm to the lobby. The meeting room can host six people at ease. All the facilities that this fine three star hotel cannot offer directly are located nearby: gymnasium, fitness, sauna, solarium, tennis, minigolf, squash, and covered swimming pool can be reached by walking distance.

Despite of the obvious upgrade of the hotel, the rates are more than ever among the astonishingly best value for money in town. A nice room costs approximately CZK 2,100 - 2,900 per night, in high season. Including a gourmand buffet breakfast, served in a vaulted cellar: the Czech way! There is a new cozy lounge for a coffee (complimentary!), a soft drink or a beer, by the reception. In spring and summer time you will certainly prefer the sunny terrace, quietly secluded behind this nice hotel. Free Wi-Fi!

Major credit cards (American Express, EuroCard MasterCard, Visa) are accepted.

Managed by "SMALL CHARMING HOTELS".

A fair tourist and business budget hotel.

CLARIS (***L): This 1920's hotel undertook a complete refurbishment and extension in 2005: bringing to its guests a level of comfort we didn't ever expect in a three star hotel. With nice volumes in the public areas and very light airy rooms, this place dedicated to urban tourists would also satisfy the businessmen, indeed.

With a very tranquil yet central location within the prestigious Prague district of Vinohrady, the CLARIS stands 200 meters from the subway stop "Namesti Miru". The Venceslas square and the National Theatre can be reached by foot (500 meters).

The 24 guestrooms are equipped with shower/bath, WC, hair dryer, sat TV, IDD telephone with voice mail, safe, and complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access. There is a facsimile service at the reception desk. There is a lovely veranda where the breakfast, included in the room rate, is served under the form of a generous buffet.

Dedicated, friendly staff.

Free of charge car parking is available within the hotel courtyard.

Like the Anna sister hotel, the CLARIS is a distinguished member of the "SMALL CHARMING HOTELS".

PERLA (***L): With a unique modern design and a strategic location, this still quite confidential address (the hotel opened in 2007) is building up a quick reputation among aware travellers.

Stylish, though cold, gray marble walls from the original 1930's building, alternate with what is certainly the most captivating lobby in town: gilded pearls support the check-in desk, and glass walls bear enigmatic asian-like calligraphy.

Originality goes up to the unfailingly good taste 64 air-conditioned and soundproofed rooms, which we liked very much. Well exposed to the daylight, they all come warm and smart. With a Zen wallpaper, elegant parquet, aesthetic bathrooms, and smooth antiallergic beds, they have been tailored made for a total relaxation. Guests would hardly believe that they stay in a tourist packed area, with the Old Town Square, Venceslas Square and Charles Bridge a few steps away.

Despite of its distinguished comfort, with safe, IDD phone, complimentary WiFi and Plasma Sat TV in the rooms, we surprisingly realized that the Perla wanted to play in the « low cost» category. We felt like -and actually were- in a four star hotel; selling itself like a three star. Room rate goes from approximately EUR 85 (Single Room / Low Season) till EUR 145 (Double Room / High Season). Budget oriented guests will like to hear that there is no minibar in the rooms, but discreetly disposed vending machines, filled with fine quality soft drinks, wine and snacks, sold out at common grocery retail price. Though this would be certainly more exciting to order -still at a very attractive price- from the very pleasant, funky Café Bar Perla (where the complimentary breakfast is served).

The wellness facilities have been superbly designed. A low rate applies for using the sauna; while working out on the most modern « made in USA » equipment is free of charge. There is a wide range of services: featuring laundry, dry cleaning, ironing, room service, fax & photocopying, concert and tours ticket service, etc.

We warmly recommend this rare jewel, which already enjoys encouraging reviews in Tripadvisor.

RESIDENCE U TRI  BUBNU (***L): This would be hard to find out a better location in Prague: in the heart of the historical centre, opposite to Franz Kafka's house, with the Old Town Square right the corner, and a five minute walk to the Charles Bridge, this 15th century, lovingly restored residence, is a pure jewel.

U Tri Bubnu (The Three Drums) occupies two adjoining buildings. Atypic, yet extremely cosy and comfortable, the 18 rooms are appointed with classy furniture. All different in size and design -some of them displaying original painted wooden ceiling- they feature four star amenities: Sat TV (with more than 120 channels available!), DVD player (a collection of blockbuster DVDs is available, free of charge, via the reception desk), and Wi-Fi or cable Internet connection depending in which building the room is located. IDD telephone, hair-dryer, safe deposit, and a minibar with affordable fares (CZK 50 for sodas and beer) are part of the modern equipment. Each room has its private bathroom - toilet, with shower or bath. Families will particularly like the suite, featuring six beds; or the great attic rooms (some with a view on the Old Town Square Tower Clock!), accommodating at ease up to four guests.

With crowds of tourists, many pubs and restaurants all around, we wondered wether the hotel was not a bit noisy; the reply is not at all. The rooms on the courtyard make you feel miles away from the capital city; while those facing the quiet street allow a perfect rest (the nightlife is concentrated between the opposite side of the Old Town Square and the Venceslas Square).

The rate (an average EUR 100 per room/night) includes a solid breakfast, served in the ground floor reputed Restaurant Ambiente Brasileiro.

The intimate lobby has its cyber-corner, with free of charge high-speed internet (guests can borrow brand new HP laptop computers on a complimentary basis, if they prefer to work in their room!).

The 24 hours reception staff is most helpful for booking tickets, trips, restaurant, mail delivery, flight confirmations, laundry, sale of drinks, maps, stamps, and sanitary goods. There is a money saving hotel taxi service from and to the airport (10 – 20% cheaper than the most reliable taxi companies like AAA).

Secure parking is possible in the Rudolfinum garage (400 metres from the hotel) for the daily charge of 600 CZK.

A most recommended charming hotel.

ANTIK (***L): A hotel with much character, located two blocks from the Astronomer's clock, with many reputed restaurants, pubs, shops and everything you could wish standing right on the door step. Amazingly quiet despite of such a great -and therefore crowdy- position. Romantic and picturesque, with a lovely café-lounge where antiques are tastefully exhibited (and can be bought from the shop next door), it provides a comfortable, homey lodging, ideal for families and couples alike.

The 12 double rooms are good sized and  spotlessly clean. Equipped with a comfy bathroom, toilet, telephone, Sat TV and a mini bar.  They all allow for an additional bed. Guests looking for a joyful animation should ask for a street view (splendid Baroque buildings all around!); the rooms oriented to the small court yard garden are extremely quiet, making you feel like anywhere but in the heart of a capital city.

In close co-operation with a reputed tour operator, the Hotel Antik is a point of departure to plenty of attractive guided visits in Prague and the Czech Republic.

A Double Room costs CZK 3490 – 3990. Rate for a Single is CZK 2990 – 3590. Additional bed is CZK 900. Including buffet-breakfast and WiFi Internet access.

A very inviting hotel.

NA ZLATEM KRIZI (AT THE GOLDEN CROSS) (***L): Put your finger right in the center of a Prague's city map, and you will find the Jungmannovo square: the great walking area where this hotel gladly stands. One minute by foot from Venceslas square. Two minutes more, and you reach the Old City square. All tourist attractions, shops and business spots agglomerate all around.

Good mark for the location; and good mark for the NA ZLATEM KRIZI inner quality also. The hotel concentrates transcendent comfort and service in its low volume. Fitting the tastes of quite an exclusive clientele, the four double rooms and four suites, offering a total capacity of 16 beds (extra beds on request in the suites), all offer a fine view on the animated streets: some open on the Jungmannovo square, and others on 28.rijna street. More than large, somehow huge, with high ceiling, all the rooms and suites display stylish furniture, grand-father's clock, IDD telephone, satellite TV, minibar, and are of course equipped with a fine bathroom (WC + shower).

Full buffet breakfast is served in the cellar, which is one of the most romantic part of the hotel.

Good range of tourist services: including transfer, sightseeing tours, concerts/theatre tickets, and laundry. Free hotel safe at the reception. The hotel NA ZLATEM KRIZI is about 200 meters from the National Theatre, where secured parking can be provided.

Due to its location and comfort, this hotel could have been ranked in our chapter about deluxe hotels; but due to its great value for money rates (in the CZK 3,000-5,050 bracket, depending on room type and low/high season), this is indeed one of the best offer in Prague still worth being labelled "cheap" at least in term of cost.

ATLANTIC (***L): With the historical city center (Municipal House, pedestrianized streets, Old Town and major museums) just round the corner, main railways stations nearby (Masarykovo Nadrazi is 300 meters away), and located one step from any kind of public transportation (metro, bus, tram), this historical hotel will please the tourist, indeed. We have visited it before its progressive refurbishment: clean, well lit, featuring 62 large rooms with high ceilings, it suffered until its take over by a new management of a soviet style decoration. Some travellers will like that sort of nostalgia; the new managing team does not, and week after week it is turning the place into one of the most attractive hotels in Prague.

Those on a budget, visiting the hotel for its low rates, will be happy to hear that they won't be increased. At least in the near future. A nice room at the ATLANTIC costs between CZK 2500 (single / low season) and CZK 3800 (double / high season).  Breakfast, VAT and local tax included. Plenty of special offers all year long.

The equipment of the rooms (all with shower and WC) exceeds what one could actually expect in a three star hotel: all the extra rooms are large enough to receive 1 or even 2 extra beds. Satellite TV, IDD telephone, hair dryer and minibar are provided. Last but not least, 3 rooms have been specially designed for disabled guests.

Among a wide range of facilities, the ATLANTIC offers secured parking in the courtyard, laundry service, and safe-box at the reception desk. The considerate ladies concierge are efficient in booking last minutes seats for concerts or theatre, and will assist you in organizing city tours. There is also the pleasant and relaxing "Lobby Bar Havana" (with a fine selection of cigars freshly imported from Cuba, sold out at cost price!), a winter garden, a banqueting room and a conferencing room. The RESTAURANT FIESTA, the best self-service downtown, offers great value for money Czech and international specialities: this is the hangout of the white collars working in the neighbouring companies. Taxi service available. Squash and indoor swimming-pool next door.

VISA, Euro/Master Card, and American Express accepted.

Managed by "SMALL CHARMING HOTELS".

An excellent address.

DA VINCI (***L): This charming place combines a perfect location (500 m from Wenceslas Square, and a 2 minutes walk to the IP Pavlova metro and trams hub), with an unbeatable value for money. From outside, it looks like an Italian “palazzo”. The lobby displays a fresh and trendy atmosphere, with some high-tech touches (flat screen TV on the walls), and opens to a lovely atrium.

Contemporary but not minimalist, the Da Vinci make you feel like in a lounge. Away from the downtown hustle. Indeed a boutique hotel, where each detail has been studied to please aesthete’s eyes and traveller’s requirement, it doesn’t look like at all a “budget hotel”. The quite large 27 smoking/non smoking double rooms (some with a balcony) and 1 apartment, equipped with dark oak furniture, Sat TV, IDD telephone, safe, have all Internet access and WiFi (available in all public area). Nice bathrooms, with hairdryer and vanity. There is a laundry service, a garage nearby (surcharge is EUR 13 / CZK 390), and a round-the-clock front desk.

Friendly and courteous services. The full buffet breakfast is included in the room rate  which is approximately EUR 120 / CZK 3,500 for a Single, EUR 130 / CZK 3,800 for a Double, and EUR 160 / CZK 4600 for the stylish family/business Apartment.

The DA VINCI has a sister hotel, the RAFFAELLO, located in the same area. With similar high comfort, quality of service and attractive rate.

The kind of place we recommend with pleasure.

RAFFAELLO (***L): This classy 29 rooms and 5 apartments boutique hotel will satisfy business and leisure travellers alike. Located in a smart Art Nouveau building, in the heart of Prague (a stroll to Wenceslas Square and the main business, shopping and touristic areas), it displays a cozy reception lounge & bar.

The spacious rooms are decorated with beautiful Italian furniture made out of sherry wood. The bathrooms are certainly among the most immaculate we have ever seen: sparkling like a jewel! Some have tub; some have shower. Or both, in the case of the great value for money, actually nice apartments: we found the duplex particularly convenient for families. Each room has Sat TV, minibar, safe, IDD telephone, and dial up Internet Access. Only the attractive rate –and the absence of room service- reflect that the Raffaello is a three star superior hotel. Prices start from CZK 3,500 / EUR 120 for a Single, till CZK 4,600 / EUR 160 for an apartment. A double costs approximately CZK 3,800 / EUR 130. Including buffet breakfast.

Efficient reception staff, laundry, and garage (CZK 390 / EUR 13).

This is the DA VINCI sister hotel.

A fair budget hotel which will please those using to stay in four star.

PAV (***L): Since 1806, this small charming hotel cultivates the rules of hospitality. Flanked by the  touristy and universally known brewery "U Fleku", ideally situated on the border of both Old and New Town, just a few steps away from tram 22 with destination the Prague Castle, it constitutes an ideal lodging at a balanced price.

Totally refurbished in 2007, in a smart, minimalist though warm style, with a pleasant lobby bar and an efficient concierge, the Páv is custom-tailored for businessmen and distinctive travelers on a tight budget (rate for a double room is approximately CZK 1,500 up to CZK 3,600 only, including full buffet breakfast!).

The 82 individually appointed and furnished rooms are large and clear. We liked very much the elegant design of the queen size beds, the quality of the fabrics, the flat screen sat TV, the safety box, and the complimentary WiFi in all rooms. A four star appointment in a three star hotel! Conveniently appointed bathrooms (some with a tub). Nice and quiet view from each rooms: even the courtyards are clean and well exposed to the sun. We are far away from the depressing « panoramas » on old, dirty blocks experienced too many times in Prague.

Note that the Páv also offers 4 large junior suites with a terrace, and 3 rooms for disabled. Last but not least, there is a pleasant and well equipped meeting room for up to 20 people, and PC terminals with free of charge Internet connection in the lobby area.

ABE (***): This Secession style budget hotel, applying real three star convenient comfort and low rates, starting from EUR 34 (!), offers nicely appointed rooms and some apartments. Most of them have been very recently refurbished, with modern furniture and top-quality beds. Large enough to feel at ease with a family, the rooms oriented to the nice terrace garden are extremely quiet. We warmly recommend you to book one of them. The rooms on the street side are sound-proofed.

The hotel has a modern lift, access for disabled, garage, and a restaurant. Free WiFi is available in the public area. The 24 hours front desk provides safety deposit box, tourist information, airport transfer, rent a car, and organises city tours on request.

Located in the business city centre, the hotel is a 5 minutes walk to A.P. Pavlova metro station. The National Museum at Venceslas Square can be reached by foot (10-15 minutes).

Very attractive packages: like 2 days at ABE hotel, including a romantic Prague cruise over the Moldau river with dinner and music, at EUR 79.

Also...:

U TRI PSTROSU  (***):We ranked this picturesque XVIIth century hotel in our FIRST CLASS ON THE CHEAP section, as we considered that for about EUR 200 per night (which is not that cheap, we know) it offers a great and charming location at the shadow of the middle-aged Charles Bridge: in the heart of Prague's walking area, on the right bank of River Vltava. Maybe you already noticed the place, as the motion picture "Mission Impossible" was partly run in that top touristy part of the city.

Just note that U TRI PSTROSU is world famous, and only gets 18 tiny but comfortable old fashioned rooms: it is therefore warmly recommended to book much in advance.

U MEDVIDKU (**):This popular tavern also houses a nice pension, with only a few rooms. Most of them are simple though pleasant. We have a definitive preference for the rooms with a view on the quiet An Peristyle street. Quite large on the Prague standard, they are equipped with shower, WC, and satellite TV. There is a cheap Internet facility downstairs, ideal to send e-mail (else, WWW connection is very slow). A generous breakfast is included in the room rate, which is approximately 1,800 Crowns (US$ 52) per night; due to the strategic location of the hotel, between Wenceslas Square and the Old Town, this is one of the best value pension we ever found in central Prague. Note that they accept majors credit cards; but you are kindly invited to pay one day before check out.

CLOISTER INN (***): A three minutes walking distance from the famous Charles Bridge, along the lanes of the captivating Old Town, this 73 rooms charming and much affordable hotel does much more than using his unique location to catch guests. While many three star hotels spam they are four, the CLOISTER INN actually offers four star comfort and services. This becomes obvious when using they executive floor: we stayed in room 534 which, together with room 527, is equipped with a fax machine and direct internet socket for businessmen. Its apparent carpent created an even more romantic atmosphere in this room we found amazingly spacious for Central Europe. This generosity of volumes even goes with the most standard single. Roofs are high, and elegantly moulded in some rooms. All are equipped with satellite TV, IDD phone, refrigerator (twice larger than a minibar, but only in Executive rooms) and safety box. Furniture are made out of fine wood from the Moravian forests. Original drawings decorate the rooms, the corridors, and the reception which is a warm and intimate place for self-service free coffee and tea.

Night life is quite animated in the Old Prague; nevertheless, we slept as fast as one could, as the bedrooms are perfectly soundproof. This recently renovated property is extremely secure: with video cameras at entrance door, safely kept entrance door, interior parking and, last but not least, the central police station in the same block street, pickpockets must be  the unique people able to find something wrong at Cloister Inn...

There is no restaurant, but the nearby Restaurace Stoleti  has some kind of partnership with the hotel: food is delicious, and bill surprisingly cheap in this top touristy area. A fairly generous breakfast is served in the hotel, included in room rate. A single would cost approximately CZK 2,200 - 3,000: depending on the season. Double is about CZK 2,750-3,800.

Close to all important business and shopping areas in the city centre of Prague, we found the CLOISTER INN an elegant and somehow relaxed alternative to some of its senior concurrents. If you don't mind the fact that there is no sauna, pool, fitness or business center (though the friendly receptionists handle fax messages and calls around the clock, as well as any secretary would do), this is certainly the place you should try to experience during your next trip.

Budget travellers will like to know that the one star PENSION UNITAS, located in the same premises of a medieval convent, is under also managed by CLOISTER INN.

PENSION UNITAS (*): Under same management as the more sophisticated *** CLOISTER INN, this pension offers clean, comfortable and splendid value for money accommodation in the center of the Old City of Prague: a three minutes walk midway to Wenceslas Square and Charles Bridge. Open to individual travellers, it also welcomes groups. There is suitable solution for any need: from the 35 twin and triple rooms with shared bathroom facilities, till those unique multibedded rooms with bunk beds in former convent cells.

The latter section is called "The Prison". Besides its religious past, it has a more recent history: those cells had been the jails of a secrete prison for political "suspects". This is, for instance, where playwright and President Vaclav Havel has been detained on repeated short period of time before being interviewed by the police. Even if the management don't like to spam it, this is as far as we know, the unique hotel in the world where guests can be pampered in a prison ! Do not expect the staff to be rough like guards: they all are young, friendly, and most helpful around the clock. A snacks & drinks vending machine, and telephone are available in the lobby.

Room rate  is approximately 1,020 Czech Crowns for a Single,  1,200 CZK for a Twin,  1,650 for a Triple, and 2,000 CZK for a four beds room. Larger groups, schools and colleges should inquire directly to the pension for special conditions.

Certainly the most affordable lodging in such a location; actually the most picturesque.
