FIRST CLASS ON THE CHEAP:  BEST HOTELS & PENSIONS IN BERLIN

OUR SELECTION IN BERLIN:

HOTEL MitArt (***): The hotel MitArt moved its address, but remains the same: suiting more than ever  the tastes of the aesthete travellers. Culture has always been highly praised in Berlin. This hotel is a pure illustration of this traditional care for creativity: it is part of a complex which also contains the IFA Galery and the Galery Sandmann, in the premise of the former National Military Printing Press of the DDR. From the reception to each of the 30 rooms, this is actually an exhibition of works from young German artists.  Each room  has been set up lovingly, and beautifully furnished with 100% natural certified raw materials and 100% natural products. This all in one displays an individual and very "lived-in" atmosphere. Quiet, the hotel makes you feel like miles away from the vivid Berlin. Room rates range from euro; 88-110 (single room) to euro; 105-140 (double room). Including the special organic breakfast-buffet.

Last but not least, the hotel MitArt is ideally located on  Linienstraße, in the historic Barn Quarter in Berlin-Mitte: in the very heart of both old and new Berlin.  It is surrounded by the beautifully derelict buildings from the early 1900s, and by art galleries, bars, and stylish little restaurants that abound with the new life and spirit of the renascent capital.  On Oranienburger str. you can find the Jewish Synagogue. The area also has many of the Ministry buildings including The Reichstag. Most of the guests are fond of art, and have chosen this very adequate hotel to enjoy Berlin's booming cultural life: they are within a five minutes walk from the famous collections on the Museum's Island. Many of the small avant-garde art galleries are nearby. So go the Unter den Linden Boulevard, the most important theatres (Berliner Ensemble, Deutsches Theater...), and two of Berlin's three opera houses (Komische Oper and Staatsoper). S-Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse is 400 meters away. Close to  the subways stations  Oranienburger Tor and Friedrichstrasse, the hotel MitArt makes most of Berlin's numerous attractions (like Checkpoint Charlie, Potsdamer Platz, Ku'damm or Zoologischer Garten...) a short fifteen to thirty minutes reach.

We found here an authentic desire to create a private and cultivated atmosphere. The hostess, Mrs. Waszkowiak, takes personal care of all its guests: readily available and helpful with all kind of information and support.

A hearty place in the heart of Berlin !

BAXPAX KREUZBERG (ex-FREDERIKS HOSTEL) (*/**): Just like Madrid, Berlin has its "movida": this fun and relaxed hostel is in the heart of the happening. A five minutes walk from the longest remaining piece of Berlin wall, very close to the picturesque Turkish Kreuzberg district, the bohemian Prenzlauer Berg, and the tourist Mitte. All the aspects of Berlin are at hostel's door. The BAXPAX KREUZBERG friendly and helpful reception clerks remain available round the clock for clever tips on Berlin's most interesting non-tourist places for walking, eating, partying or shopping. Though this is one of the most affordable hotels in town, guests check into clean, safe and comfortable rooms: ranging from single through double, triple, four-, five-, six-, seven- bed rooms. The most adventurous travellers could also try the dormitory. To save money you pay for your bed sheets separately (so you can also use your sleeping bag). Showers are shared on the floor (except for the luxury double room). When breakfast is available on request, guests can prepare by themselves lunches or dinners: sharing the enjoyable community of the huge, fully equipped and madly painted kitchen. Supplies are available in the supermarket right across the road, or from a Vietnamese shop next door. Cheap and palatable Kebab or nice, affordable Indian, Chinese or Arabic dishes are available a few blocks away, in Kreuzberg. The hostel’s bar is a popular meeting place. In summer, guests can rest outside on the courtyard benches.

Public transportation is easily accessible: it takes two minutes to walk to the closest U-bahn stop Weberwiese, and five minutes to the S-bahn and train station Ostbahnhof (make sure you get off at the farthest exist to the east on the train tracks). Using the U-Bahn (metro), you can reach the Alexanderplatz, Brandenburger Gate, Ku-Damm, Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg in a few of minutes. For more romanticism and freedom, bicycles are for hire at the reception desk, which is also the place where Internet access and e-mail service are available.

Rates go from US$ 12 (Sleep In, from 7 beds up) till US$ 25 (Single room). They are among the cheapest in town.

A quiet though much animated and enjoyable hostel and meeting place.
