CENTER OF VENICE & LIDO:

DANIELI (*****L): Located  in the historical heart of Venice, Italy most famous hotel lies just around the corner of St. Mark's Square, the Basilica, the Doges' Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, and dramatically overlooks the Venice lagoon. Doge Dandolo's 14th century palace, displaying a monumental Venetian gothic style with pink marble, stained glass, gold leaf, columns, Murano glass chandeliers and antiques, has been seen in so many movies that everybody entering its lobby finds its atrium and golden staircase as impressive as familiar.

The comfort and decor of each guest room captures the warmth and rich cultural heritage of Venice. Accommodations include 225 luxurious rooms, and nine lavishly appointed suites. Each room offers air conditioning, television, direct dial telephones, and self-service minibars. The magnificent Doge Suite is considered the most luxurious in town, reserved far in advance by statesmen, movie stars and leading entrepreneurs.

DANIELI's charming rooftop restaurant, La Terrazza's, offering delectable Mediterranean and regional cuisine, complements the captivating panoramas of the Grand Canal, the lagoon and, on the horizon, the Lido and Adriatic Sea. The Terrace Bar is open from May to October. The Dandolo Piano Bar is the ideal place for a romantic "rendez-vous".

To preserve its precious architecture, the hotel has no swimming pool. Nevertheless, there is free boat transportation available during the summer months to the Westin Excelsior and the Hotel Des Bains at Venice Lido.

Well worth the trip!

GRITTI PALACE (*****L): The GRITTI PALACE dates back to 1525, when it was commissioned by the Doge of Venice: Andrea Gritti. Construction began that same year. Archival records show that frescoes attributed to the Veronese style that originally adorned the facade, no longer survive today. At first the official residence of the Gritti family, it was later used as residence of the Vatican's ambassadors to Venice. Later still it was home to successive noble families. Over the centuries it has had illustrious guests. Officially opened in June 5, 1948, the GRITTI PALACE is located right on the Grand Canal. Facing the grandiose Church of Santa Maria Della Salute, it makes it particularly enchanting. From the terrace, directly on the Grand Canal, guests can enjoy an incomparable view of Venice.

The 82 guest rooms and 9 suites offer luxurious comfort in an atmosphere created by precious decorations and beautiful antique furnishings. Somehow less famous than the DANIELI, the GRITTI PALACE remains its unique actual counterpart... without any conflict, as both hotels are managed by the same group!

Venice is famous not only for its fine art, scenic vistas, and a charming way of life, but also for its cuisine. The quite formal Club del Doge restaurant and the casual though ritzy Bar Longhi offer guests culinary delights and enchanting views of the canal and city. Local and fresh ingredients and the tradition of Venetian gastronomy are the central themes that the executive chef elaborates in his famous recipes.

Rates tend to be slightly more expensive than at the DANIELI.

HOTEL DES BAINS (****L): The hotel, through its splendour and traditions, illustrates what the Lido used to be in its golden era. Always in step with the times, the Hotel Des Bains still offers a complete range of sports to be enjoyed in or out of the water: swimming in the hotel private beach or outdoor heated pool surrounded by a lovely private park, tennis, windsurfing, golf and horseback riding.

The 191 rooms and suites match tastefully the hotel exterior architecture: traditional, smart and fitted for relaxation, they display the richest fabrics and furniture. Guests like to experience the social Venetian life at the Colony Bar. With live piano music, this is one of the most elegant and animated spot after dark.

RESIDENTIAL SUBURBS OF VENICE & VENETIA:

VILLA MARGHERITA (****L): Situated 15 kms (20 minutes) away from Venice, on the main street SS 11 connecting Venice to Padova, this 15th century typical Veneto "house", former residence of the noble Venetian Contarini family, has been transformed into a sophisticated country inn fulfilling the aesthetes highest requirements. It used to be fashionable for rich Venetian peers to have a palace along the cool and scenic banks of the River Brenta. One can still see nowadays quite a lot of the mansions:  elegant witness of an opulent lifestyle, surviving in the VILLA MARGHERITA.

The Serenissima Republic opulence and perfect taste characterize the parlours, drawing room -with their mirrors , frescoes, stuccos and glowing open hearths- and lavishly aristocratic 19 rooms and suites. Just like in a castle hotel, they are definitely personalized: done in a sophisticated California style, with incredibly rich fabrics displaying the rarest and finest colours and design, they are all different one from another. Spacious, with wood panel, period antiques and Persian carpets, they are all equipped with satellite TV and minibar. All rooms have a charming view to the secular and delightfully peaceful park. A terrace at the rear is used for breakfast during warm weather. The villa is set far enough back from the road to escape noise; however, one can easily walk just outside the gate to catch the public bus to Venice.

Similar tranquillity pervades the communal areas, as much in the dining hall as in the Venetian "campiello", which opens onto the immense green of the park behind the Villa. The discrete conversation niches indoors - with large and deep sofas, smooth carpets and fine paintings- provides an excellent setting for moments of relaxation. They are also perfectly convenient for discreet business discussions. Their setting is simply ritzy! The frescoes and elaborated perspectives, mixing real and fake marble, make the living room a pure marvel: this is both an impressive and relaxing place to rest in from of a glass of Amaretto or Martini, reading a good novel by the open fireplace. The kind of place you will love at first sight!

Beautiful frescoes also at the lovely and very popular restaurant Margherita. Specialized in Venetian cuisine with an emphasis on fresh fish, is just across the road and is always busy. The selection of wines and champagnes at the restaurant is notable.

The energetic Valeria  and her family are all of hand to insure their guests are well taken care of - even the grandmother works in the kitchen! Personal service here is without peer. With demand having exceeded capacity at Villa Margherita, the Dal Corso family -Remigio and Valeria, with their sons Alessandro and Dario, run both the hotel and restaurant with typically enthusiastic Italian style- has acquired another villa nearby which they hope to have ready for guests within a few months.

Rates are more than reasonable. A Single room would cost about US$ 85. Double room Standard are US$ 150. Double room De luxe US$ 170. A lavish Junior Suite goes for only  US$ 190. Including sumptuous buffet breakfast and welcome basket of fresh fruit. Promotional rates and packages are available.

Affiliated to the ROMANTIK HOTELS & RESTAURANTS and to the CHARMING HOTELS, the VILLA MARGHERITA received two red towers in the Michelin Italia Red guide, and three red towers in the Gault & Millau guide Italy.

A splendid address we would like to warmly recommend!
